This line from a book I just started hit me hard, making me think of my own move from the Bay Area to rural Western New York, becoming part of the problem of rising property values and rents even here:

"The burden of this shift [the movement of people due to the pressures of climate change to better, safer locations] will not fall on everyone equally---indeed, displacement will create new cleavages between the rich and poor, the privileged and the marginalized... These disasters will serve as reckonings for a society that has attempted to tame the forces of nature while leaving the provision of shelter to the whims of the market." (Jake Bittle, "The Great Displacement: Climate Change and the Next American Migration", Introduction)

Seeing first-hand how much of a stranglehold housing had on the morals and ethics of the city of Lafayette, California has made me really want to get involved in the local politics if only to try and get ahead of similar problems here before they grow too large to easily deal with. Only problem is I'm not a politician and politics REALLY doesn't like preventative action.
